For a Sad Mother Elephant

So I was watching something on TV and heard the words "man eating elephant". I was like what the hell? Those giants are not killers. So I looked it up and I was aghast.
In the tea Fields of India, villages are in constant battle of keeping elephants away from their crops, not their tea but the food that will feed their family. However the Indian villages refuse to kill the animals (I wouldn't kill them either) due to the deity Ganesha. So every night, the shoot fire works, run and shout at the elephants. This usually works though highly dangerous.
Elephants live in family groups and are highly protective of calfs, if separated from the family or feels that the baby is threatened they will become afraid, anxious, and will charge. And that is what happened countless times to a mother elephant and her baby.
With the stress of being separate from her family for days and protection of her baby it was mentally draining. Until one day the worst thing that could happen to her happened. Her baby was accidental killed. The mother snapped. That one night she killed 1 person. Later she attacked a village and killed 5 people. Her count got up to 17 people were gone due to her rage and sadness until she got the order to be executed. Upon her autopsy, doctors found traces of digested human flesh in her system.
Though I was shocked and saddened for the 17 people that had died, I also felt sorry for the mother elephant. Elephants take care of their babies up to their teenage years so there is a strong motherly bond between baby and mom. Just like a human mother and her baby. She was sad, angry, and just went crazy over the lost of her baby and not being able to find her family.
If the people of the villages were educated about elephant behavior and actually got some aid maybe for the tea companies they are growing tea for, this didn't need to happen. But even today the Indian villages have to battle against the elephants every night, all year. They need some help. So I made this drawing to honor the mama elephant as well as to inform.

So I have had a long time to work with my art and have some aha moments. After having some hard times, four pieces of my recent drawings were in the Nuclear Family Drawing Class: Recent Works Show in the Curris Center Gallery at Murray State University and were then shipped over to the West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Clemens Fine Arts Center for a while.
It was a great experience learning about framing and displaying my art. It was the first time I had ever seen my work placed behind some plexi. It was very invigorating

Well the bat needs some major/minor repair work on him from his ride from Louisville back to Murray. A wing broke and his fur is striping off. So sad :( But I drew a new zombie gal for the quote and I shall post it on here later on in the day!

Here is my bat at the moment. The wings didn't really turn out the way wanted them, but oh well. The fur I am making for it is made out of those Starbuck's Doubleshot cans and Big K Root Beer cans.

Shrew is a gross/fun project my sister and I created. We found a shrew that one of our dogs or cats had killed outside while cutting grass. The poor thing was still intact. My sister, before becoming an art student was a biology major, she cutting and disecting many poor little critters in her early school career. She had saw on a website on how easily remove the meat on specimens and she wanted to try it out. We placed the shrew in a empty jelly jar full of hydrogen proxide and let it set there for a week. To our surprise, it worked. The proxide was eating away the meat stuffs. My sister then used her disecting skills and got rid of what ever meat was left. We then placed the remains (just being bones and some small little bits) to be cleaned. We then had a perfect little shrew skelenton. We then decided it would be cool to make it into something. We then rebuilt the skelenton with super glue. We created a little scene for it out of model trian scene parts, sticks, as well as other dead bugs we have collected over the years. Over all there are about eight dead bugs and a dead shrew in that glass case.

S.Q. 36

This little dude was a project my sister and I did. He's made out of a taxidermy foam of squiral we bought, his modle number S.Q. 36. When we got him, he was just made out of foam, had no ears nor eyes, toes. We then covered him with clay, shaping in features of the face, creating toes/claws. His ears were created using wire and the clay. The tail is some wire, we knotting and frying yarn. He was then spray painted and painted. His eyes were then added, they just being some stuffed animal eyes.

I have started working on my bat. So far, I have destroyed an umbrella. I have removed most of the spokes, but two to make up the wing body, I then took apart the removed spokes and added those parts to create the little bat fingers. As well as a strip of a soda can ( a brand called Ski, I have never heard of it till now. I placed a trash can on our dorm floor's lobby, asking for cans, so far these Ski cans are all I am getting. Thank you whom ever is helping me out!).

FINALLY FOUND THE CAMERA! Was in the place it should of been. Don't you hate that, you loose something but it is exactly where it is supposed to be. Gahh. At any rate, I went with my buddy Luaren on a fild trip in her Greek and Roman art class, they heading to Nashville to visit the Parthanon model there. Having learned about in the intro Art History class I was taking at the time, I knew some about the temple. the temple is in Athens, it being made for the Olympian gods, though there is a large statue of Athena inside, due to the main god of Athens was Athena (hence the name). I didn't know what to expect. When I saw it I was amazed. We then went inside, we having to go around the heavy wooden doors. Inside was dark and cool, but low and behold there she was. The huge statue of Athena, it was breath taking. The room was all quiet and stuff. It was amazing. I would of loved to see the real thing, but alas. The one in Tennesse is a exact replica, it probably the closest I am going to get to the real thing for a while!

I am now getting started on all these art projects. The bat should be done in about a week and the quote drawing in about the same amount of time. I choose the "Zombies, they creep me out man" quote by Dennis Hopper, zombies having a special place in my brain. They remind me of being back home and watching countless numbers of good and absolutly horrible horror movies with my dad in a dark, cold, basement, surrounded by trees that is utterly creepy at night. Hopefully I will be able to find a camera to take some pictures of these things when they're done!

I have been very busy with my art projects for school such as carving three plaster scluptures and now must start working on a life sized fruit bat made out of wire, aluminum cans and pannyhose! As well as test and two papers. And I am poor and do not have a scanner her in my dorm nor a camera. So hang in there with me!

I have to read this book for CIV, it being of civilizations (of course), but there is one group that seems to have no representation in the book, and that is Native Americans. Through out the chapters it talks about how the West got to be the monster it is today and about the colonies. And in it, it reads that in America there was all this free land that the colonist could take. Excuse me, but it was not free. Native Americans lived there, it was their land, colonist killed them and took it. The Native American culture is the worst represented people that I have ever seen. We have all this info on what an impact slavery was for African Americans and how bad it was for them, but what about the Native Americans? They had it the same, if not worse. And they didn't even get their freedom from the white men with the Civil Rights movement, they don't get their own holiday. Because they are still the repressed, vanishing people that Westerners have destroyed. It isn't right to just shove people under the rug. The Native American cultures should be held in as much respect as any other race here in America if not higher, it is THEIR LAND, not some greedy, selfish, egocentric, invading Europeans.

China is taking over?

I am reading a book for CIV class, Why Geography Matters by Harms de Blij. I had to read a chapter how China is becoming a great economic/political power and Americans are growing to be afraid of it. Why? Is it because they are communist? Who cares! Maybe economics would be a little better if basketball players got paid the same as a teacher (which I think is not right that a person that plays a game gets paid more than the person that is teaching the generations to come). Are they going to take away some of America's dominance in the world? American and humans in general seem to something like a virus, invading areas and changing it to suite it's own habits and not worrying about the people and things that were there once before. I'm sorry, I didn't know the Earth belonged to Americans.

Breaking the Law

I think thus artist is pretty cool too. This is Caravaggio, we only know about him through his police record (Caravaggio is not his real name, but a nick name, meaning something about violence). His style of art was not liked among the people in the 1600's, due because his speciality was night scenes and depicting the truth (notice how Mary, the woman in the blue, is old. Another bit of useless info, any woman that is dressed in blue robes from back then and maybe even today, is most likely Mary). He once painted a picture of Mary walking, and she was barefooted, walking on a dirt road, so he made her feet dirty. The viewers hated it (its heresy to paint Mary with dirty feet!). In this painting the other figures, especially the man in the red, are Caravaggio's buddies. The man in red was a criminal as well, and people didn't like seeing him hanging around with Jesus in paintings.

Artemisia Gentileschi

I would place this artist as one of my personal favorites and role models. Gentileschi was one of the few woman artist back in the 1600's. She was raped by her drawing teacher and went to court over it, and was tortured to make sure she was telling the truth (a woman artist talking about a male artist was crazy).

This painting of the same subject was done by Caravaggio, she being a follower of his work. Which one do you think would be the one done by the woman? Notice how Judith looks rather weak and almost disgusted .

I would also like to point out how the women look in this painting and any painting before the 1960's. They are strong, not a stick women. If you were skinny that meant you were most likely going to die, being a full bodied woman was the most attractive way to look, up until the 1960's. Just wanted to point that out.
